1. Nutritional values

2061

Passion fruit has generated considerable consumer interest because of its attractive color and micronutrient content. The flesh has high water content (about 80% water), with a musky, pleasantly sweet tart and lingering flavor. Delicious, passion fruit is a rich source of antioxidants, vitamin C, and minerals. The edible seeds of passion fruits are high in polyunsaturated fats (omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids), vitamin E and insoluble fiber.

2. Seasonal development

2062

here are several passion fruit varieties for commercial purposes in Vietnam. The most common of them is the purple (Passiflora edulis) and the yellow (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa), both of which are easy to grow, giving round fruits with a diameter of about 5-8 cm/2-3 inches. Passion fruit is available year-round with peak season winter through summer. The fruit ripens in about 80 days after pollination, turning from green to deep purple (or bright yellow) when it can be harvested. For fresh market or use, the fruit is picked when color changes occur.

3. How to know if passion fruit is ripe?

2063

To choose a perfectly ripe passion fruit, look for deep purple or yellow skin. Select passion fruit that is heavy, large, and plump for its size, and wrinkled, a sign the fruit is ripe. Favor moderately wrinkled fruit over excessively wrinkled. You can also compare the ripeness of 2 fruits by weighing them in your hands. Favor those that feel heavier and fuller than you would expect based on their size. Choose larger fruit whose weight indicates a reasonable juice content. Avoid overly hard and smooth-skinned passion fruit which is underripe.
